Continental Adopts Concept of Taking Environmentally Friendly Tires to Production.

Continental sets a new standard on the use of sustainable raw materials for its multi-series tires from concept to production in just 1 year.

Tire manufacturers who have been using silica from rice husks, polyester from recycled PET bottles and recycled raw materials in the Continental Series tires have offered technological innovations that set a new standard. One area of the focal point is the sustainability.

In early 2021, tire manufacturers focused on using silica from agricultural waste, polyester from recycled PET bottles and other renewable raw materials. Thanks to the Conti Green Concept that uses recycled and renewable raw materials. Nowadays, Continental has brought these concepts to the Ultra Contact NXT series of tires, the most sustainable tires launched last year. This thing has emphasized that Continental is the tire industry’s most progressive manufacturer in terms of the sustainability.

“Sustainable innovation can happen on the road. We can ensure that tire innovations and concepts are ready for our customers and into the productions as quickly as possible without having any impact on the safety and the efficiency. We were the first to incorporate pioneering technology, such as, using recycled PET bottles in tires. More than that, we are also the first tire manufacturer to launch a model with a high percentage of renewable and recycled raw materials, thus, making our world more sustainable,” said Jorge Almeida, Head of Sustainability at Continental Tires.

Polyester Fiber from PET Bottles.

PET bottles often end up being incinerated or landfilled. Thanks to Conti-Re.Tex technology, Continental and its partners have therefore succeeded in producing high-quality polyester fiber for tires from recycled PET bottles which, in one tire derived  from recycled PET bottles, 9-15 bottles are used (depending on the tire size).

The premium tire manufacturer brought Conti-Re.Tex technology to production readiness in less than a year. This is an amazing story because on the production process change in a tire-factory, everything must be in compatibility with one another. The use of new materials is a complex operation for Continental’s Material Engineers and Experts. In the end, when it all works together perfectly, customers will be beneficial from high-performance tires with safety, energy saving and durability.

Stepping Towards Sustainability Systematically.

Continental works continuously to develop innovative technologies and sustainable products and services throughout the value chain beginning from sustainable sourcing to recycling end-of-life tires. By 2030, premium tire manufacturers aim to use more than forty percent (40%) of renewable and recycled raw materials in their tires while Continental sets its aim to attain a proportion of one hundred percent (100%) of sustainable raw materials in its tires by 2050.
