H2 Green Steel – Boden, Sweden


H2GS will be the world’s first renewable hydrogen-based integrated steel plant utilizing high-grade pellets with DRI direct to EAF. Green steel production is based on green hydrogen and electricity based on renewable sources instead of fossil fuels along with two energy recovery plants that produce steam for electrolyzers and downstream processes.



SMS group scope includes supply from the DRI plant to finishing lines. This plant will focus on CO2 neutrality, the whole process chain is almost carbon neutral (reduction of 95% compared to conventional steel making). The route for H2GS is DRP-EAF, as the plant will use iron ore pellets with extremely low gangue content. The facility will have a 2.1 million ton per year capacity hydrogen direct reduction plant to transform iron ore into direct reduced iron.




Thyssenkrupp, Duisburg


This will be one of the world’s largest decarbonization projects worldwide, which will have annual savings of more than 3.5 million (currently producing 20 million metrictons) CO2 per year in the future. This plant will have the capacity to produce 2.5 million metric tons of DRI and is scheduled to be completed by 2026.



SMS group will supply a DRI plant that can operate on natural gas and hydrogen (0-100) %, two innovative electric smelters, and associated auxiliary units. It is based upon MIDREX Flex, which provides the flexibility to operate on any mixture of natural gas and hydrogen (up to 100 % H2) thereafter; it could be coupled with OBF for smelting and INBA SGP for granulated slag similar to BF slag.




An Important lever for Sustainability is to Keep Materials in the Cycle.


The use of renewable energies and efficiency improvements will only achieve part of the required reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. Recycling is also a vital factor in the equation. And that’s where metals shine because their properties are a perfect fit for a sustainable circular economy.




The term circular economy refers to a sustainable economic model that aims to avoid waste and continuously uses resources. It involves reusing, sharing, repairing, refurbishing and recycling materials and products to create a closed-loop system and reduce the consumption of resources and minimize the generation of waste, pollution and carbon emissions. Metals are particularly suited to a circular economy as they are extremely durable and can theoretically be recycled an infinite number of times without making any compromises to their quality. Recycling indirectly avoids emissions in the extraction, processing and transport of ores and in primary metal production, while at the same time improving the availability of rare elements, especially in regions poor in raw materials.




Metals and their alloys are valuable materials, which can be fully recycled without degrading their properties. In addition to the financial impetus, the environmental and social aspects are crucial. The recycling of metals enables us to preserve natural resources compared to metal production lines using only virgin raw materials. Recycling emits less carbon dioxide and other harmful gasses and requires less energy. More importantly, it is also economically more viable and provides businesses with solutions that offer reduced production costs. For example, metals and other valuable substances can be recovered from metal scrap, electronic waste, batteries, etc. In the past, large amounts of slag that still contained valuable metals were dumped. Old deposits can also contain valuable materials. When clearing and refurbishing these deposits, money can be earned not only from the value of the recovered materials, but also via the increased value of the refurbished property.



WEEE recycling


SMS group provides solutions for the efficient recycling of WEEE to recover the contained metals, such as gold, silver, platinum, palladium, copper, nickel, and cobalt. Battery recycling without limits


Primobius GmbH is an incorporated joint venture between Australian Securities Exchange listed company Neometals Ltd (ASX:NMT) and private German global plant manufacturer, SMS group GmbH, to commercialise an efficient, environmentally-friendly recycling solution for end-of-life and scrap lithium-ion battery (LIB) cells. The Primobius recycling process offers a scaleable, efficient, sustainable recycling solution that generates high purity, low carbon footprint battery materials for reuse in the battery supply chain.
